Maplesoft Presents Awards of Excellence to University of Birmingham Students

Two students receive scholarships for graduate studies

Waterloo, Canada, March 22, 2017: Maplesoft today announced that the 2017 Maplesoft Excellence Scholarship Awards are being presented to two graduate students from the University of Birmingham. The scholarships provide monetary assistance for three years to each student for their graduate studies. They were selected from a group of students that were instrumental in encouraging and contributing to the use of technology in various undergraduate courses at the university.

The University of Birmingham has a rich history of adopting technology tools for teaching and learning in the classroom. Maplesofts tools such as Maple, Maple T.A. and Möbius are now widely used in the University. Maple T.A. was initially introduced to Birmingham students by Nicola Wilkin, a professor and the Director of Education for the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. She implemented Maple T.A. to address the differing mathematics qualifications and backgrounds of her students, and as a solution to provide immediate feedback to students during tests and assignments. Over the years, the university has integrated Maple T.A. into several courses, thanks to a team of students and teachers under Wilkins leadership.
"Maple T.A. has been tremendously successful for our university and we are happy to see some of our students being honoured by Maplesoft with these scholarships," Wilkin said. "Maple T.A. has allowed us to create a level playing field in the classroom, bringing students of differing backgrounds together in a common learning environment, enhancing their knowledge and comprehension. Our students are increasingly identifying Maple T.A. as a substantial learning tool during their time here."
Maplesoft has a strong relationship with the University of Birmingham and intends to use these scholarships to support STEM education, honour students commitment to mathematics, and highlight the universitys success with Maplesofts technology tools for education.
"We are excited to award the Maplesoft Excellence Scholarships to these passionate and enthusiastic students who have been working extensively with Maplesoft solutions," said Michael Pisapia, Maplesoft Vice President in Europe. "We are looking forward to strengthening our partnership with the University of Birmingham, and collaborating with the award recipients as they progress in their graduate programs. We are confident they will be strong ambassadors for Maplesoft, and mentors to other students who are eager to pursue their math and science education."
The 2017 scholarships were awarded to Robert Stanyon and Jordan Moodie from the University of Birmingham.
