UltraFlex using induction to preheat gold and platinum to 1000°C and 1600°C and maintain the temperature for 30 minutes

The preheating process for each of the samples was successfully completed, with high energy- and cost-efficiency. Thanks to the lack of open flame, the preheating was a completely safe operation that did not require any specific environment.

In a recent demo, UltraFlex showed the high energy- and cost-efficiency of induction heating for research purposes. The demo had been requested by a leading science research institution looking to evaluate gold and platinum samples for isotope analysis in a spectrometer.

The research institution turned to UltraFlex due to the efficiency of induction heating in the case when materials need to be preheated at high temperatures. In this specific scenario, a sample of gold put inside a quartz tube had to be preheated to a melting temperature of 1000°C, while a sample of platinum in a quartz tube had to be preheated to a melting temperature of 1600°C. After the target temperature had been reached, it had to be preserved for a period of 30 minutes.

An UltraFlex induction heater from the UltraHeat S series had been considered most suitable for this preheating process. UltraFlex UltraHeat S are small and efficient 2kW induction heaters that operate with a water-cooled or air-cooled remote heat station. They utilize the latest switching power supply technology and adaptive digital phase control, which efficiently operate in wide frequency ranges.

Achieving the target melting temperature for each sample was very quick, at steps of 200°C. When the target temperature had been reached, a step was programmed in the induction heater, so that temperature would be maintained for 30 minutes.

Thanks to using induction for this preheating, the quartz tubing was preserved fairly cold. That prevented the diffusive loss of hydrogen, which occurs really fast if the quartz tube gets heated to high temperatures. The preheating process for each of the samples was successfully completed, with high energy- and cost-efficiency. Thanks to the lack of open flame, the preheating was a completely safe operation that did not require any specific environment.
