Canadian AI Startup Independent Robotics Wins $2.28M Contract to Bring Conversational AI to Multi-Agent Robot Swarms
IMPAC enables human operators to interact with complex robotic systems through natural, conversational language rather than complicated instructions or computer code, keeping multi-robot operations synchronized and mission aligned. By turning natural language commands into executable plans across multi-agent and multi-domain environments, IMPAC reduces cognitive load and acts as a force multiplier for existing teams.
MONTREAL, QC — April 29, 2026 — Independent Robotics Inc., an AI startup specializing in human-machine interfaces, has secured a $2.28 million contract from the Government of Canada under the Innovative Solutions Canada (ISC) program. The contract will support operational testing of IMPAC, Independent Robotics' natural-language command and control software for autonomous robots (uncrewed systems).
The funding administered by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) facilitates a year-long testing program, launched February 2026, at DRDC Atlantic Research Centre in the Halifax region. This initiative will test autonomous marine vehicles with field-ready IMPAC software and aims to validate how natural-language AI can be securely deployed to manage multi-agent robotics in real-world scenarios.
"We are fundamentally changing how humans interact with machines in paced environments," said Julian Ware, CEO of Independent Robotics. "We leverage AI to improve operator decision making under pressure, rather than replacing it."
"Building natural language processing that is both context-aware and capable of functioning in remote, low-connectivity environments is a significant challenge," added Dr. Gregory Dudek, CTO of Independent Robotics. "This partnership allows us to stress-test our systems in operational environments."
