QUAN: New PIAP Robotics System Could Soon Join the Fight Against Terrorism

From terrorist plots to industrial disasters and violent weather systems, law enforcement and first responders must face a host of potentially dangerous crises.

HOUSTON, Jul 30, 2012 Robocop may still be science fiction, but some very real robots could soon prove to be invaluable allies in the $5 trillion war on terror. Quantum International Corp.'s QUAN +29.17% latest joint venture target, Poland's Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurement (PIAP), is developing a sophisticated team of robots capable of supporting police, emergency responders and other personnel in dangerous security and rescue operations.

The promising new project, known as Proteus, is being realized by a consortium of Poland's leading science centers led by PIAP. The designed system includes three autonomous, multi-functional robots supported by unmanned aircraft and a mobile command center integrated into an efficient team capable of undertaking complex missions.

"From terrorist plots to industrial disasters and violent weather systems, law enforcement and first responders must face a host of potentially dangerous crises in the 21st Century," said Quantum CEO Robert Federowicz. "PIAP's Proteus system is a new technological solutions to these deadly scenarios that could save a lot of lives and money. It's exactly the kind of innovation we hope to help the institute develop and market worldwide."

Proteus is only one of the exciting robotics breakthroughs that PIAP is considering for commercialization. The prestigious agency is also working on revolutionary new robotics tools for the cleanup of oil spills, among other designs. Quantum is currently conducting due diligence toward a definitive agreement with the prestigious institution.

Quantum is focused on aggressive growth as it competes alongside robotics companies including iRobot Corporation (IRBT), Honda Motor Co., Ltd. HMC -0.19% , AeroVironment, Inc. AVAV -0.26% and, potentially soon, Apple Inc. AAPL +2.58% .
