Team MIT-Olin Sails to Victory at RobotX Challenge in Singapore

Needham, MA November 02, 2014

After months of preparation and three days of actual competition, the MIT-Olin team won first place in the final standings of the 2014 AUVSI Maritime RobotX Challenge in Singapore.

The team came in first place overall, second place in land-based judging, and first place in the best paper category with their unmanned vessel, the USV: Athena-Nike.

Students from 15 universities around the world traveled to Singapore for the competition.

All the teams had to outfit an unmanned surface vehicle with sensors, computers, and software and get the vehicle to complete a course based on various maritime missions. On the course, each team's vessel has to complete a set of tasks including the avoidance and detection of obstacles, identifying and reporting on a specified target and searching underwater for an acoustic source.

Team Faculty Advisor, Prof. Dave Barrett said, "Team MIT-Olin is very pleased to have won first place in the very first Robot-X maritime challenge. This was a very difficult set of races and it was an honor to be able to compete in an international venue with 15 strong, talented teams from some of the best engineering institutions in the world. I am very proud of what our team has accomplished and this contest really showcases what a combination of Olins 'Can-do' engineering spirit and MITs advanced technological wizardry can achieve. "

The competition, held at The Float at Marina Bay in Singapore, was jointly organized by the National University of Singapore Faculty of Engineering, Science Center Singapore, and the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International Foundation.

The Athena-Nike was a joint partnership between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Olin College. The Olin engineering contingent of the Joint MIT-Olin student team includes Devynn Diggins 17, Mindy Tieu 17, Shivali Chandra 17, Nikolay Lapin 15, Justin Poh 16, Paul Titchener 15, Alex Kessler 15, Madeline Perry 15, Jay Woo 15, Zoher Ghadyali 17, William Warner 15, Victoria Coleman 15, and Victoria Preston 16.

uEye XC AUTOMATICALLY PERFECT IMAGES

Combining the ease of use of a webcam with the performance and reliability of an industrial camera? The uEye XC autofocus camera from IDS Imaging Development Systems proves that this is possible. Its high-resolution imaging, simple setup and adaptability make it an invaluable tool for improving quality control and streamlining workflows in industrial settings - especially for cases where users would normally employ a webcam. The uEye XC autofocus camera features a 13 MP onsemi sensor and supports two different protocols: USB3 Vision, which enables programmability and customization, and UVC (USB Video Class). The UVC functionality enables a single cable connection for easy setup and commissioning, while delivering high-resolution images and video. This makes the uEye XC camera an ideal option for applications that require quick setup and need to manage variable object distances. Additional features such as digital zoom, automatic white balance and color correction ensure precise detail capture, which is essential for quality control.
