5D Robotics Raises $5.5M Funding in Seed Round for Commercial Business

Focus and delivery of Automation for Industrial, Factory, Heavy Equipment, Mapping and Inspection Markets moving ahead

Carlsbad, Calif. — February 2, 2016 — 5D Robotics Inc., a leader in the development of automation technology for vehicles, today announced it has closed $5.5 million in a seed round from private investors for its commercial business efforts.

The need for increasing automation in many different verticals is on the rise and with it the demand for highly accurate navigation and precise positioning. The 5D technology provides an automation solution that can be easily installed and reconfigured to bring robotics innovations into tough environments and do it economically. 5D solves position and navigation down to the centimeter level allowing vehicles to park side by side, indoors, outdoors and in the snow, fog, or rain.

"We are happy that much of the round was from a strategic partner and demonstrates the strong level of confidence they have in our automation solutions," said David Bruemmer, CEO and co-founder of 5D Robotics. "In the end, this seed round was oversubscribed and we are pleased with this level. Now our focus is on execution for our customers, and rapid growth."

5D Robotics will use the funds to accelerate the development of commercial products, software, and solutions into several vertical markets such as Industrial Heavy Equipment, mapping and inspection.

Universal Robots - Collaborative Robot Solutions

Universal Robots is a result of many years of intensive research in robotics. The product portfolio includes the UR5 and UR10 models that handle payloads of up to 11.3 lbs. and 22.6 lbs. respectively. The six-axis robot arms weigh as little as 40 lbs. with reach capabilities of up to 51 inches. Repeatability of +/- .004" allows quick precision handling of even microscopically small parts. After initial risk assessment, the collaborative Universal Robots can operate alongside human operators without cumbersome and expensive safety guarding. This makes it simple and easy to move the light-weight robot around the production, addressing the needs of agile manufacturing even within small- and medium sized companies regarding automation as costly and complex. If the robots come into contact with an employee, the built-in force control limits the forces at contact, adhering to the current safety requirements on force and torque limitations. Intuitively programmed by non-technical users, the robot arms go from box to operation in less than an hour, and typically pay for themselves within 195 days. Since the first UR robot entered the market in 2009, the company has seen substantial growth with the robotic arms now being sold in more than 50 countries worldwide.
