QUAN Follows U.S. Government's Lead on Co-Robotics
Quantum International is focused on aggressive growth as it competes alongside robotics companies
HOUSTON, Jul 16, 2012 -- As the nation's focus turns to election-year issues, emerging robotics company Quantum International Corp. QUAN +9.16% is working to capitalize on a new robotics initiative championed by the current administration.
Late last month, the president unveiled the National Robotics Initiative, pledging $70 million in government money to help accelerate the development and use of co-robotics--robots that work beside or cooperatively with humans. Four federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Agriculture, have issued a joint solicitation to provide research funding for next-generation robotics.
The new initiative is good news for Quantum, which is exploring the potential commercialization of new breakthroughs in several promising fields of robotics. The company recently signed a letter of intent to begin due diligence toward a possible joint venture with one of Europe's top robotics labs: the prestigious Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements (PIAP) in Warsaw, Poland.
"Quantum is already pursuing potentially lucrative opportunities in tactical and industrial robotics," said Quantum CEO Robert Federowicz. "We are extremely pleased by the new federal support for co-robotics and we expect this initiative to help jumpstart the domestic robotics economy. We're already seeking potential partners to help us develop and commercialize new co-robotics innovations with the potential to revolutionize American society."
Quantum International is focused on aggressive growth as it competes alongside robotics companies including Honda Motor Co., Ltd. HMC -0.92% , AeroVironment, Inc. AVAV -0.19% and, potentially soon, Apple Inc. AAPL +0.38% .

3D Vision: Ensenso B now also available as a mono version!
This compact 3D camera series combines a very short working distance, a large field of view and a high depth of field - perfect for bin picking applications. With its ability to capture multiple objects over a large area, it can help robots empty containers more efficiently. Now available from IDS Imaging Development Systems. In the color version of the Ensenso B, the stereo system is equipped with two RGB image sensors. This saves additional sensors and reduces installation space and hardware costs. Now, you can also choose your model to be equipped with two 5 MP mono sensors, achieving impressively high spatial precision. With enhanced sharpness and accuracy, you can tackle applications where absolute precision is essential. The great strength of the Ensenso B lies in the very precise detection of objects at close range. It offers a wide field of view and an impressively high depth of field. This means that the area in which an object is in focus is unusually large. At a distance of 30 centimetres between the camera and the object, the Z-accuracy is approx. 0.1 millimetres. The maximum working distance is 2 meters. This 3D camera series complies with protection class IP65/67 and is ideal for use in industrial environments.
