Talking PACK EXPO Las Vegas with igus
Q&A with | igus
Tell us about your company and its role in the industry.
For over 60 years, we at igus® have been developing and manufacturing tribologically engineered plastic components. As a family-owned and operated company, we are committed to using our innovative materials to develop creative solutions for our customers while exceeding expectations through quick and reliable service.
Improving sustainability is another core goal at igus, whether that is achieved by eliminating grease and other harmful lubricants from applications, providing long-lasting solutions that minimize the need for replacements, or even developing products derived entirely from recycled materials. This has helped position us as a leader in the packaging industry as more emphasis is placed on designing sustainable application solutions.
Why is exhibiting at PACK EXPO an important opportunity for your company this year?
PACK EXPO presents the perfect opportunity to demonstrate how each of our product lines can be used within a single industry or application. Packaging technology, due to its vast reach and prevalence in numerous other industries, presents a particularly excellent area of opportunity to utilize our components and make full use of their unique benefits such as dry-running and maintenance-free operation.
PACK EXPO also will be an excellent opportunity to get a sense of the state of the industry, and where it will be heading in the coming months. This invaluable insight will allow us to respond and continue to innovate on our own offerings and provide customers with unique and innovative solutions.
What makes your booth a must-visit destination for PACK EXPO attendees?
The packaging industry is widely varied, and no two packaging lines are the same. The igus booth will set itself apart by providing an equally varied range of components and solutions that can work within nearly any packaging application. Anyone at the show who visits our booth will be able to find something relevant to their own operations that can solve a key problem and offer improved performance, lower costs, and greater sustainability.
Will your company be participating in any educational sessions, demos, or forums during PACK EXPO?
While we won't be participating in formal sessions, demos, or forums on the official schedule, we've made sure that our booth is a dedicated hub for education and innovation. We believe the most valuable insights come from one-on-one interactions, so we'll have product and industry experts readily available to provide personalized demos and answer specific questions from attendees. Visitors can stop by at any time to learn more about our products and services, as well as packaging technology as a whole and the latest innovations driving the industry forward.
When you get a chance to explore the exhibit hall yourself, what are you most excited to see? Any sessions, pavilions, or innovations you're particularly looking forward to?
The Reusable Packaging Pavilion looks to be one of the most exciting parts of PACK EXPO this year. Seeing all the innovative ways sustainability is being considered and implemented in packaging technology is fascinating, and of course relevant to our own core identity at igus. Sustainable practices are hardly new, especially in packaging, so the ideas and solutions presented, especially when it comes to software applications, are sure to be truly cutting-edge and worthwhile.
With the rapid advancements in automation, robotics, and AI, how is your company looking to integrate these solutions into upstream and downstream packaging processes?
When considering automation and robotics, a major focus at igus is meeting customers where they’re at, rather than jumping to the most advanced robotic cells and systems. Understanding the fundamentals and starting small allow users to become more knowledgeable about automation with minimal risk, building a foundation for success when it comes to more advanced solutions. The small wins — simple pick-and-place tasks, automated labeling, or quality inspection, for example — can be used to build up to larger successes and more comprehensive automated systems.
Looking beyond automation and robotics, what are your insights on current and future trends in the packaging sector?
The packaging sector is one of the few areas that has consistently kept up with the latest trends and developments in robotics and automation. The future of growth in this area will largely lie in educating the right people on how and where to use specific robotics solutions. Our own online platform, axis, is one such way this can be achieved, through open discussion with industry professionals, free educational video courses, and regular updates on the latest developments in the automation sector.
The next steps for the packaging industry will be the integration of sustainability and automation. The vast potential automation has will open avenues to rethink sustainability. The way products are packaged, the lifespan of automated systems, and overall packaging line design will all need to be reexamined to account for continuous technological developments in automation and robotics.
