UltraFlex induction soldering assembly for an electronics manufacturer within mere 3 sec

Besides being a time- and cost-efficient process, induction soldering would guarantee the customer consistent, repeatable results every time, regardless of the operator skills.

The time- and cost-efficient, precise and clean induction soldering of an assembly used in the electronics manufacturing has recently been demonstrated by UltraFlex. UltraFlex - a major provider of advanced, digitally controlled induction heater solutions, had the demo scenario set up per request of a potential customer - an electronics manufacturer looking to improve the time and quality of their soldering process for an electrode assembly. The assembly, made up of a 0.25″ (6.35 mm) pin and a circular 2.5″(63.5 mm) stainless-steel plate .040″ (10.16 mm) thick, was part of a pressure differential system with sensors for air and non-compatible gases. The targeted productivity rate was 3 seconds per soldered part.

UltraFlex engineers considered UltraFlex induction heating equipment from the UltraHeat SM series as most efficient for this soldering scenario. UltraHeat SM is a compact 5 KW induction heater operating with either a water-cooled or air-cooled remote heat station. It can efficiently operate in a wide frequency range, which was important for this heating application.

The soldering process was started by placing a solder ring under the joint. High-acid solder flux was applied around the joint to clean it of any residual oxides and guarantee a good connection between the parts. Heat was then applied onto the head of the pin so the heat would transfer down and focus on the areas needed rather than spread to other areas.

Thanks to the focused heat, the soldering process was completed within the customer-targeted time of 3 seconds. The joint obtained had been reliable and clean.

Besides being a time- and cost-efficient process, induction soldering would guarantee the customer consistent, repeatable results every time, regardless of the operator skills. Finally, due to the lack of open flame, smoke and noxious emissions, the manufacturer would be able to achieve a completely safe process - safe for the operator, safe for the environment.
