The Changing Role of Robotics in Materials Handling: Industrial Journalist Thomas R. Cutler Interviews Steven Hogg of Bastian Robotics
Short-term, robotic integration will continue to grow as companies continue to establish automation plans, and long-term, robotic automation will be a standard in every facility. This will be a requirement for companies to compete in the global marketplace.
Michael Grothaus for FastCompany: Amazon hosted a secret robotics conference in Palm Springs, Florida last weekend, reports Bloomberg. The conference, dubbed "MARS," which stands for "Machine-Learning (Home) Automation, Robotics and Space Exploration," was an invite-only event held at the Parker Palm Springs that brought together experts in the fields of robotics, artificial intelligence, space exploration, and home automation. Amazon has not publicly commented on the conference, but reports on social media from attendees leaked its existence. Bloomberg notes that the conference hosted some big names, including film director Ron Howard and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. The event was also attended by a number of academics from MIT, the University of California at Berkeley, and ETH Zurich, sources told Bloomberg. Also in attendance were some CEOs and representatives from companies including Rethink Robotics, Toyota Motor Corp., and iRobot. Cont'd...
Hired March 14, 2016, McNicholas' primary goal is to develop a sales organization and channel strategy that meets the current and emerging needs of customers while leading Allied Motion to continuously exceed the organic growth rate of the motion control industry.
The US economy is one of the front-runners in the global automation race. By 2018, the number of industrial robots sold to 2018 will, on average, rise by at least five percent per annum, to a new record of 31,000 units (2014: 26,202).
Mouser Electronics will be a major sponsor of this week's FIRST Robotics Competition Dallas Regional event occurring March 24-26 at the Irving Convention Center. The annual robotics event, which fosters STEM education, attracts hundreds of high school students from across the area.

Dorner's New Universal Drive Simplifies Motor and Mounting Package Options for 2200 Series Conveyors
This new drive technology, developed by Electric Torque Machines (ETM), along with Dorner's unique mount package is designed to integrate universally across the 2200 Series end drive conveyor line. An advantage the Universal Drive brings to operators is the ability to save time by reducing SKUs and stocked service items into one manageable part number.
For manufacturers who rely on CNC machines, they know that servo motors are one of the first components to break down. Electric Enterprise offer one of the industries fastest turnaround times with 24hr repair.
The L-731 magnetic linear drive ensures high velocity and acceleration.
NEXCOM's NexROBO robot control simulation software can assist the application development of smart robots, thereby freeing up the time required for developing motor drives and controllers for laboratory testing and the time to code motor control programs.

Schmalz Technology Development - Vacuum Generation without Compressed Air - Flexible and Intelligent
• Vacuum generation that's 100% electrical; • Integrated intelligence for energy and process control; • Extensive communication options through IO-Link interface; Schmalz already offers a large range of solutions that can optimize handling process from single components such as vacuum generators to complete gripping systems. Particularly when used in autonomous warehouse, conventional vacuum generation with compressed air reaches its limits. Compressed air often is unavailable in warehouses. Schmalz therefore is introducing a new technology development: a gripper with vacuum generation that does not use compressed air. The vacuum is generated 100% electrically. This makes the gripper both energy efficient and mobile. At the same time, warehouses need systems with integrated intelligence to deliver information and learn. This enables the use of mobile and self-sufficient robots, which pick production order at various locations in the warehouse. Furthermore, Schmalz provides various modular connection options from its wide range of end effectors in order to handle different products reliably and safely.
